Music After Jesus rose from the grave, He did not immediately ascend to heaven. He stayed for 40 days, and during that time he had the opportunity to give his disciples some final instruction and also give them the chance to get used to his glorified and risen body. It was during this time that he shared the Great Commission with his disciples around the shores of Lake Galilee, telling them to go into all the world and preach the gospel to everybody. These words have echoed down through the ages, inspiring countless generations with the need to move out of their comfort zone and take the gospel to unreached areas. [♪ music ♪ This was the last time that Jesus would share some words of counsel with them, and He wanted to make it clear for those who had missed the point that his kingdom was not of this world.

There was to be no temporal kingdom. There was to be no deliverance from Roman bondage. The kingdom of God was open to everyone from every nation. We often read these verses and think nothing of it today, but at the time it was written it was a groundbreaking concept that the gospel could go to every nation. Even still, many of his disciples did not get it, with Jesus having to give Peter a vision to reiterate this point in the book of Acts.

He was a man of great wisdom, and he was a man of great wisdom. Jesus made his way from Galilee down to Jerusalem, and unbeknownst to them, he assembled his disciples 1 last time, and together they walked out of the city of Jerusalem, past the Garden of Gethsemane, and ascended the Mount of Olives. This mount was special to Jesus. It was on the slopes of this mount where He often found refuge in the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. On this mount where He wept tears of agony.

On this mount where He cried over Jerusalem. Here on the Mount of Olives, not on Mount Moriah and not on Mount Zion, but on the Mount of Olives, Jesus chose the place for his ascension. [♪ music ♪ Reaching the summit, Jesus looked over His disciples 1 last time, and then with a power beyond human strength, He was pulled upward out of their sight. As they strained their eyes to get 1 last glimpse of Him. They turned and saw 2 angels who stood there and said, You men of Galilee, why stand you here gazing up into heaven?

This same Jesus who was taken from you shall so come again in like manner. No doubt these angels would have wanted to have been in heaven to welcome Jesus when he arrived, but they took the time out to comfort the saddened disciples. [♪ music ♪ The disciples returned to the city, not downcast and sad, but fired up, inspired, and looking forward with hope. We serve a risen Savior, not a dead inanimate object. Our God went into the grave, conquered death, rose again, ministers on our behalf in heaven, and will come again soon, just like a real physical body ascended to heaven.

So Jesus will come in a real and a literal way. The Christian faith is built on this truth. We have this hope that burns within our hearts, hope in the coming of the Lord. We have this faith that Christ alone imparts, faith in the promise of His Word. We believe the time is here when the nations far and near shall awaken, shout and sing, Hallelujah!
